Riddley Scott’s “Alien” stands as one of the greatest creature feature sci-fi flicks of all time, spawning numerous sequels and spin offs (four movies to date) along with a dedicated myriad of mimic-monkey movies (wow, that was so clever). Drawing on the works of H.G. Geiger, the Alien creature design alone is one of the most strikingly iconic images in all Hollywood history…which serves to remind us that a long time ago (but also in the future[sic]) in a land far, far away (Hollywood), movies were made that bit hard with jaggy, serrated teeth - in this case, two sets at a time.

Like most 80’s sci-fi movies(Insemenoid, Titan Find, Deep Star Six), some shitty mining corporation blunders our creature fodder leads and sidekicks into some unenviable scenario. Unlike most 80’s sci-fi movies “Alien” pulls it off.

The claustrophobic cat and mouse game that unfolds is basic horror fare, but handled so adeptly that it feels fresh. On the negative side, being made in 1979, the sound mastering seems to have suffered a great deal - even in digitally re-mastered versions.

Point & case:

Man, it’s a little quiet…..<turns it up> I wonder what Rippley (Sigourney Weaver) just mumbled…<turns it up>my lip reading skills are rubbish<turns it up>

-Cut quickly to a loud spaceship screaming through the air

<Furiously turns down>

Repeat ad infinum

It’s no-ones fault, it’s just essentially a cinema movie - and you better bet the projectionist isn’t sitting back there with a giant remote control, continuously increasing\decreasing volume.

The director’s cut has a few more decent additions, but for first time views the theatrical version is a far tighter experience.

One bit of advice though: next time, before you destroy the entire ship and jettison yourself away into deep space for fifty seven years, check inside the escape pod, love. IDIOT!

Get your remote controls ready - dim the lights - we’re going mining!

OFFICIAL REVIEW

Astronauts must fight an unknown creature not only for their own survival, but for the survival of all mankind in Ridley Scott’s terrifying science fiction masterpiece.
