The last broadcast

A creepy little bitch of a movie this one and it also pre-dated ‘the Blair witch project’ by a good few years with its whole documentary style horror. This time though the black hills has been replaced by the jersey Pine Barrens, and the gaggling trio of high-school misfits has been replaced by a gaggling trio of web-based entrepreneurs (no its not fucking 3ms) hoping to make a few bucks by doing a live broadcast on the hunt for the jersey devil…admittedly its not one of the best ideas they’ve ever had as one at a time they meet their brutal deaths at the hands of something or someone deep in the dark woods.

There’s a picture of what the ‘jersey devil’ is reputed to look like in the movie and to be fair after seeing it (it looks like a spastic donkey on two legs) I would probably have a crack at going on the hunt for it myself, I mean come on, I’ve eaten scarier looking kebabs.

The point im trying to make though is that’s its not monsters im scared of, its big fucking animals and prowling serial killers/man rapists and there’s absolutely no fucking way you would get me near a deep-dark woods scenario without some heavy tooling up done before-hand.

At the very least I would have had a baseball bat with some forks taped on to the end of it for the jabbing. These boys weren’t even armed with as much as a cattle-prod between them and they where, in my eyes, woefully prepared for a monster hunting expedition and deserved their brutal demise for their stupidity alone.

The documentary feel of the movie is mixed with interviews, coroner reports, police statements and…the lost tape of whatever happened on that last night, mailed to our interviewer by persons unknown. The tapes all fucked and chewed but at different stages through the documentary we are played another five minutes of the tape after its been cleaned up using computer and editing techniques.

Its at these points during the movie that the hairs on the back of the neck stand to attention as we feel we are (or will be) privy to some sick snuff movie, or terrifying horror that we shouldn’t be watching, especially with the messed up sound and crackling screen grabs. And you’ll really shit yourself once that fucking face begins to appear on your screen one evil-bastard pixel at a time…

Quite a baffling and disappointing ending though, but if we forgive these low budget film makers that little error then this a creepy little gem of a movie.

OFFICIAL REVIEW

The hosts of a cult internet cable show undertake a live broadcast to find the legendary Jersey Devil.

Only one of them survived the night and was convicted of the other’s murders. A year after this, filmmaker David Leigh recieves an anonymous envelope containing the last video the shot and decides to make a film about it…
