It’s hard to explain how I feel about this movie- needless to say if you ever have kids, don’t let them watch it. I mean I’m ok now (mostly), but any seven year olds out there reading this should probably say “fuck watching the thing”.
Originally John Carpenter wanted the creature to attach itself to its victims face, emanating a hallucinogen that would show others what they wanted to see. I imagine that principal would only affect the victims face, enter Kylie Minogues head on Kurt Russells body stage left. Thankfully they ran with the mimic alien placing some needed distance between this and Ridley Scotts masterpiece, Alien (an obvious influence).
The gore is fantastic in every possible sense of the word. How many movies have a main character’s decapitated head turn into a spider? Yes, a spider. Tight claustrophobic set pieces are well constructed and executed and some of the cinematography is spectacular - particularly for a movie of this genre.
Years later, (no longer seven) I watched it in a cinema and was amazed by the audience reaction. Every viewer, bathed in white, flinched in repulsion as characters exploded in front of them (“Who is seven now idiots!”). I also don’t think I’ve seen so many huskies get killed in a movie which is a nice touch.
Typical brooding Carpenter synth score fills gaps where needed and has the correct tone throughout. On another note, the original movie “The Thing From Another Planet” is so shit that I’m surprised Carpenter even gives it a credit.

this was a re-make that totally outshone the original (unlike some).Good acting ,story,effects it had it all including some jumpy Omigod! bits but did they have to kill off the wee doggy woggies sniff sniff
